I think that, for me, it was really important to not leave the construction of the film out because it’s a film about storytelling and how we tell stories and why we tell stories. I thought it was really important to include the process of making this film itself in the film and some of that involves some rather unflattering and ruthless moments for me like directing my dad when he’s … pouring his heart out, basically. And, you know, you do get into this mode, I think, when you’re telling a story — or certainly when you’re making a film — where you can kind of lose your sense or your barometer for what’s human or humane and certainly I think there are a few moments in the film where I’m directing my dad where I don’t come off that well, but I certainly come off as somebody who’s trying to tell a story above all else.

Sit’n Chill Upgrade

Last night an amazing thing happened. A bench which had been created by a community art collective and then subsequently crumbled under the seasons of a northern city was rebooted into a bigger and better incarnation. True Edmonton style. We had the privilege of being able to ride up and give the creators the experience of witnessing pure elation at the site of their creation. Yesterday we posted pictures of what we thought would be the last form of the Sit’nChill bench, broken and tagged up. Just hours before we passed the original sit’n chill and remarked at how it had lived a long time, as an unsanctioned installation, but its time had likely come. Crossing 109 st to see a bench that fits in so well with surroundings, that we had to assure ourselves our first impressions we were not false, was an amazing experience. An event like that reassures your faith in a place and the people you share it with. This is the underlying spirit of the original “Make Something Edmonton” ethic that has permeated this city for a long time, the unsanctioned, unaccredited, selfless and fun. As one of the creators put it this is “Fine Graffiti”, unsanctioned, and thus perhaps illegal, but refined to have a purpose and distinctive character which can be appreciated on many levels. This is just a glimpse of the possibilities that can be produced through an accountable street art and graffiti culture if we seek to open up our streets to artistic and other interventions. Thank you so much to the creators for taking the time, and the risks, to give something beautiful back to this city. Stay Rad Edmonton!

I know I made a post about this a while ago, but I’m going to make it again since we’re getting into the hottest time of the year.

If you’re out in the Sonoran Desert in AZ and you see any of these [bottles with insults], please pick them up and throw them away. Vigilante groups are leaving intentionally empty gallon jugs in popular crossing points and that is the last thing that somebody needs to see as they’re trying to cross.

If you can, carry clean and full jugs with you and leave them where you see these. Gatorade or Electrolit are also really good for re-hydration.

Contact Humane Borders if you meet anyone in need of medical attention.

Wow… The fact that people would go out of their way to do this… SIGH.

This is really sad, but THANKS to the people who are out there saving lives by replacing these empty jugs with full ones.

I realized all of a sudden that my dissertation chapters were getting a little out of control. I think on my chapter map/outline plan I had 12 chapters or something ridiculous like that. I think in an earlier stage of planning and writing this thing out, smaller chapters seemed more manageable. Like if I take a bunch of little things, it adds up to one BIG thing? AMIRITE?

BUT it wasn’t really working, so I re-configured my chapters and condensed them into 7 total - intro, methods, 4 substantive chapters, conclusion. It felt awesome!

This weekend we went to a friend’s farm near Rosalind, Alberta. They live in a yurt with only solar power and a well you have to pump by hand. They have Highland cattle, Icelandic sheep (triplets were born that day!), a llama, two nice horses and a Golden Doodle named Scuppers. They grow heritage grains and beans as well. Their lifestyle is pretty different, and difficult too, but it’s nice to see.

Then we went to my dads place and ate hot dogs and drank ice cold Kokanees and I flew a kite in the sunshine.

A social anthropologist and a photographer from Toronto are working on projects aiming to dispel common myths about life in the North. Dr. Lindsay Bell of the University of Toronto and her research partner, Jesse Jackson, were in Hay River last week to examine various public spaces and analyze how people interact within them.

Some days I open up a current dissertation chapter word doc and things are great! I think to myself, hey, this isn’t half bad! You’re not a total idiot! This makes sense! I see where you’re, um, I’m going with this!!! Etc.

Other days (LIKE TODAY) it’s the opposite. Everything I write reads as soooo stupid and terribly written but I try to write a few paragraphs anyway because I already know from experience that I will read them as less crappy another day. Or fix them. Or whatever.

Man! Even this blog post sucks! I’m going to switch to something else. Writing is not my bag today. See ya!

Today almost every aspect of life for which data exists can be rendered as a network. Financial data, social networks, biological ecologies: all are visualized in links and nodes, lines connecting dots. A network visualization of a corporate infrastructure could look remarkably similar to that of a terrorist organization. In An Aesthesia of Networks, Anna Munster argues that this uniformity has flattened our experience of networks as active and relational processes and assemblages. She counters the “network anaesthesia” that results from this pervasive mimesis by reinserting the question of experience, or aesthesia, into networked culture and aesthetics. Rather than asking how humans experience computers and networks, Munster asks how networks experience — what operations they perform and undergo to change and produce new forms of experience. Drawing on William James’s radical empiricism, she asserts that networked experience is assembled first and foremost through relations, which make up its most immediately sensed and perceived aspect. Munster critically considers a range of contemporary artistic and cultural practices that engage with network technologies and techniques, including databases and data mining, the domination of search in online activity, and the proliferation of viral media through YouTube. These practices — from artists who “undermine” data to musicians and VJs who use intranetworked audio and video software environments — are concerned with the relationality at the core of today’s network experience.
